Protocol and Special Events Office Established, Director Named
Nancy Gordon lists Commencement, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Black History Month celebration, Founders Week, and the annual holiday craft fair as her favorite events.
In addition to these annual events, Gordon now will be organizing the protocol for visiting guests to the University, as well as advising on academic, social, and business protocol.
She has been named executive director of the recently established Office of Protocol and Special Events, a division of the Office of Communications and Public Affairs, which will welcome high-level state, national, and international visitors to the University.
Gordon has been with the University for 16 years, beginning in 1997 as director of special events in the Office of External Affairs. She became senior director of University Events in 2006.
The protocol and special events office, Gordon says, is available to assist in a variety of ways regarding procedural and logistical needs for international visitors, including general protocol questions, planning and managing event logistics for dignitaries, and diplomatic protocol support and liaison arrangements for dignitary security. The office also is available to help schools and administrative units with protocol needs, including University etiquette and procedures, a role not new to Gordon.
“I am honored and very excited about assuming this additional role,” says Gordon. “I have seen our global influence grow in my time at the University, and am looking forward to playing a part in our diplomatic relations.”
Gordon will be assisted by Holly Bowman, assistant director, special events.
